my question is related to menopause symptoms.  i know i cannot take hrt due to a history of blood clots-pulmonary embolism- and tia.  however, is bhrt safe considering this history?

No!: Estrogen increases risk of blood clots. Having a history of blood clots (TIA, PE), you need to avoid all estrogen-containing products. This includes oral birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that contain estrogen. Bioequivalent hormone replacement therapy (B-HRT) does contain a form of estrogen and therefore is as dangerous for you to take as regular HRT. Avoid all estrogens!

Need CT angiogram: You really need a CT angiogram of the chest to reliably detect pulmonary embolism. IV contrast is needed to see blood clots in the pulmonary vessels. Anticoagulation is the main treatment for pulmonary embolism.

i just had an angio pulmonary cat scan with contrast to rule out a pulmonary embolism. can that detect lung cancer? chest xray normal. 42 years old.

Yes: This type of Chest scan is primarily focused on the pulmonary artery and vasculature which is why you received the contrast. However, it is still a Chest CT and it takes a good look and the lung tissue too.  It would see your lung tumor if it were there.

Not a feature: Usual symptoms of pulmonary embolus are: Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Cough (it may be bloody, and there might be blood in the gunk you cough up)
Pain in your back
Much more sweating than usual
A lightheaded feeling, or passing out
Blue lips or nails

Shortness of breath: Along with shortness of breath, signs of a pulmonary embolism would be coughing that may produce blood, chest pain that worsens when taking a deep breath, lightheadedness, wheezing, increased heart rate.  If you are concerned of a possible pulmonary embolism, immediate medical attention is advised.

: No. Pulmonary thrombi can kill instantly if large, multiple small one cause high blood pressure in lungs and heart failure. A thrombus/embolus gets resolved/organized in a matter of day and does not last "years".

Wait: It usually breaks up by itself as the body dissolves it.Anticoagulation is needed for at least a year to prevent possible new clot.
