zoloft is very good for my anxiety but higher doses made me very apathetic. my psychiatrist added abilify since my family history of bipolar disorder. however i wanted something to increase my energy and motivation so he added wellbutrin. thoughts??

: Keep good records and ask your family if they think you are better. Difficult to predict what works best in an individual. In using meds everyone is a new experiment to see what works and what does not. Keep at it and you all will find a good plan.

Loaded Question: I assume you are asking about benzodiazapines.  A provider is ultimately responsible for prescribing medications safely. Prescribing benzodiazapines to someone with a serious alcohol problem is in some ways like handing the person a drink. If you drive intoxicated with benzodiazapines or benzos plus alcohol - someone might be killed on the road.

Talk and medicines: A psychiatrist can talk and use medicines to help with anxiety.  It may be that medicines can help but being able to talk can help too.  Many psychiatrists use mainly medicines but some can see some patients for individual psychotherapy.  You may benefit from seeing both a therapist and a psychiatrist. See. below: You can start discussing this problem with your primary care, you can be started on "as needed" medication. As you are having more frequent symptoms, you may need a different type of medication that is taking daily to hopefully prevent further anxiety attacks. Your doctor can also refer you to a therapist to help you with behavioral therapy to be able to understand and cope with your symptoms.

Yes, if you went: to see a psychiatrist for anxiety and depression, why not try what they are suggesting? You may want to speak with a psychologist about psychotherapy as well, but in the meantime the medication can give you relief from the symptoms faster than psychotherapy.
