: The most important component to treating an inflamed area is rest. Wearing a splint and elevating the area will help the circulatory and lymphatic systems to more effectively drain the area of excess fluid. Anti-inflammatory creams may help, as will antiinflammatory oral meds.

can you recommend an over-the-counter topical drug (cream ointment or lotion) for fairly severe eczema on my hands also in om my back calves

I : I would try a moisturizer cream that contains ceramides such as cerave cream.  I prefer creams as they are more moisturizing and seem to retain moisture better.  Also, when bathing, use a soapless cleanser such as cetaphil or cerave since these don't dry out your skin quite as much.  If your eczema doesn't improve, consider a visit to a dermatologist who can possibly prescribe a steroid cream or ointment.

could cuticle cream be used on your hands?

Yes: If the cuticle cream is simply very concentrated emollient, then it can be used on the hands as well.  A few cuticle creams contain an alkaline component designed to soften and remove the cuticles and usually have directions to wash it off within five minutes.  These should not be used on the hands.

Hydrocortisone cream: Hydrocortisone cream is the only OTC one I am aware of among the steroid family. It's of a low-intermediate potency compared to the clobetasol one which is very highly potent. She may try the hydrocortisone if it's the only option, otherwise a prescription is needed... Get well!

Cerave: Cerave, neutrogena norwegian hand creme are non - greasy hand creams that could be useful. You must also avoid irritating chemicals by wearing gloves during wet work. Allergy patch testing may reveal chemicals that you should avoid. This test is done by a dermatologist in 2office visits 2-3 days apart.

May help: with less frequent hand washing,use of emolient lotion, examples include lachydrin (lactic acid) lotion,aquafor ointment and eucerine and consider f/u with dermatologist

Potentially: If by "nappy cream" you mean common diaper ointments.  Zinc oxide has been demonstrated as a potentiator of wound healing, and is found in many diaper ointments.
However, the sterility of some ointments designed for topical skin use cannot be guaranteed and could actually infect a wound with new bacteria.
