are there any other medicines that are good in treating ulcers caused by too much stomach acid other than ppis?which are not that strong but effective too..which have less side effects?

: Is the ulcer in your stomach or duodenum?  Need more info.  You cannot give us too much.

i have acid relfux ( acid coming up). ppis ( prilosec, nexium, and prevacid) give dizziness and swelling in my throat. doc won't put me on prescription. zantac and pepcid isn't strong enough. no h.pylori. should i take ppi regardless of side effects?

Reflux: Have you tried strict dietary measures like avoidance of caffeine, alcohol,nicotine,spices, and greasy foods which can loosen the sphincter or valve between the stomach contents and esophagus? You could try taking gaviscon as a preventative of gerd. Sometimes symptoms are not due to acid reflux but due to bile reflux which doesn't respond to ppi's or zantac (ranitidine).

still have reflux 1 year postpartum. i am 25 lbs over weight. i take pepcid and gaviscon but i need something stronger. ppi's are hard to get off?

Over time it: may be hard to get off of PPi's but are required for symptom control once failed at maximum dose H2 blockers. After controlled for 1 month(no sx.) try to switch back to H2's. C how long ur good.

Behavior/diet: There are a few things a patient should do that may be overlooked. It is important to avoid foods or fluids that contain caffeine or nicotine in any form because they are chemicals that aggravate reflux.Acidic foods or carbonated beverages also aggravate. Laying down within an hour of eating/drinking fills the stomach &amp; adds pressure to reflux, so it should be avoided.

Reflux: Short term medically a trial of reglan may help. Howevr, I would let your doctor who prescribed the PPI know that your symptoms are not changing.

Can taper dose...: ...slowly over a period of a week or two, but after a few days of having no drug in your system you'll still be back to making basal levels of stomach acid. Perhaps a step-down to an H2-blocker or use of antacids may achieve your goal.

No: A 'ppi', proton-pump inhibitor, is a medication like Prilosec or Prevacid (both over-the-counter now). Ranitidine is zantac, (ranitidine) which is a histamine antagonist. They work differently to help reduce or block acid production in the stomach.

Yes: Famotidine is generally safer than ppi's long term, but make sure that your symptoms are controlled on it. If yes then you can take that but check with your gastroenterologist who diagnosed you with barrett's as it can depend on the severity. Also continue with a healthy lifestyle, minimize irritant foods, exercise regularly and stay hydrated.

: PPI can cause both acute and chronic kidney disease. The acute injury is in the category of allergic reaction, called acute interstitial nephritis and it may happen weeks or months after the exposure. PPI-related chronic kidney disease occurs after a prolonged and continuous use of PPI (many years of exposure). The definite physiopathology of the PPI-related CKD is still not completely defined.
