i have a history of pleurisy. since yesterday i've had pain in chest & shoulder/back on deep inspiration. can the shoulder/back pain be pleurisy too?

Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

chest/rib aching on left side. mid-back pain when bending. ekg, chest xray, blood work clear. overly sweaty sometimes (esp. night). er thought pleurisy but naproxen doesn't seem to help. thoughts?

Yes: The problem could be in the thoracic spine -- talk with your doctor and get a good imaging study of your mid back.

Pathways: For getting treatment for any kind of medical condition include a detailed history, physical exam and many times recommendations for few tests in order to substantiate a diagnosis. Not all conditions benefit from immediate use of drugs. If you received a diagnosis at a specific facility and got previously treated with steroids would suggest starting with them, as steroids are also drugs of abuse.

Generally: OTC medication with ANTI-INFLAMMATORY action eg: IBUPROFEN can be very effective!

Have you had a chest x ray since you developed these recurring symptoms? If not suggest one (or better yet a CT scan ) to definitely diagnose the reason for this repeated pain!

R/O PLEURITIS : PLEURITIS=inflammation of the lining of the lung and Pericarditis = inflammation of the lining of the heart can both cause referred shoulder pain. As well as a PE=Lung blood clot. You need a full exam lab testing CXR/EKG/Shoulder X-ray to evaluate your symptoms . Please seek prompt medical attention for diagnosis and treatment options.  YES IT CAN RECURR. You may need a course of PREDNISONE.

Other symptoms: Usually on only one side of the chest, extend
 to  shoulder or abdomen.Worse when cough
 sneeze, or suddenly move.May ease with holding breath or pressing painful area. Costochondritis or inflammation of anterior rib endings sometimes can mimic pleuritis.

Pneumonia: The lining of the lung is the main part of the lung that can feel pain. What you describe sounds like worsening pneumonia that has spread to the edge of the lung near the areas that hurt. Fluid is likely to collect there and get infected. It is hard for the medicines given by mouth (or even by vein) to kill the germs in this fluid pocket. Talk to your doctor, as a chest xray will help show it.
