in a cbc, what does it mean if it says giant platelets: present?

It depends on your H: Giant platelets means there is a larger proportion of young(freshly made) platelets. It is a finding sometimes seen in people who have low platelet counts due to conditions like ITP. Do you have any health problems such as your platelet count? Lab data: Without a clinical history and exam, lab data seldom has significance.  This may mean nothing at all.  Discuss with the doctor who ordered the testing.  Sometimes this simply means an "active" marrow or one which is being stimulated by some ongoing process, infection, other inflammation, etc, .

It's moot: This is a good question and it has never been answered. The lab is doing a good job of being attentive. If the count remains within normal range, we do not have to worry about low platelets. High platelets are seldom a problem and when it is, it'll be obvious from the smear.

: By definition, the platelet count will always be low when TTP is present. There also could be evidence of other organ damage, such as kidneys, neurologic abnormalities, heart problems or anemia, among others. if you think you have drug-induced TTP, contact your doctor immediately. Good luck.

Nothing: It is of no clinical significance.  Just reporting incidental findings of normal variants.

Doubt it: Isolated, this little fragment of a complete blood count means nothing. You also have to know the idiosyncracies of the technician -- are there overcalls? It wouldn't surprise me. The basic numbers are probably more helpful. Best wishes.

Viral illness: A viral illness can affect those cells your are describing.  Children can have a viral illness and not show many signs or symptoms.  If a blood work, called Complete Blood Cell Count, is done during the illness it can be a surprise when it shows a possible viral illness in an otherwise healthy child.

Repeat labs: The laboratory findings are slightly abnormal.  Repeat the studies one week later to see if any variation.  If persistent then your pediatrician may refer you to a blood doctor or hematologist.  The risk of bleeding after tonsillectomy is low but not zero.  It can occur right after surgery or up to 8 days later.  The repeat of testing is necessary.

Nothing special: Platelets sometimes clump because they are sticky.Reactive lymphocytes are noted at some point after they are stimulated by a variety of viruses trying to infect the body. The findings are not specific to a particular diagnosis.

i have low wbc 3.7, monocytes 22% (never been this high) and large platelets present. all else normal. i have lupus, ra,  factor 5 leiden. thoughts?

These findings: are pretty "classical" for early VIRAL INFECTION!
This can vary from Flu to Measles etc etc
