Atherosclerosis: Plaque build up may be progressive and cut off the flow of blood to the receiving organ like the heart, brain, legs etc. Or the plaque can break open sending little pieces down stream or worse the plaque can break open and potentate a blood clot that completely and suddenly blocks the flow of blood - think heart attack or stroke. This is the #1 cause of death in the United States.

Reducing blood: High lipid levels can speed up a process called atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Your arteries are normally smooth  on the inside, but as you age, a sticky substance called plaque forms in the walls of your arteries. Plaque is made of lipids and other materials  in your blood. As more plaque builds up, your arteries can narrow and stiffen. Eventually, reduced flow causes problems.

: A visible retinal plaque in the vasculature is indicative of an embolism and certainly does raise concern that you are at risk.  The management complexities are beyond the scope of this site and would urge a direct visit to your doctor ASAP.

Hmmmmm.: It would be helpful to see a picture, but the differential includes seborrheic dermatitis, tinea infection or psoriasis. Any of the atopic dermatites could be considered. Also, contact dermatitis or allergen exposure.

I would lean towards seborrheic dermatitis given the distribution.

Just a guess though.

i've got a slight plaque buildup in my neck vessels, both sides. what can i do to clean them out?

See a cardiologist: A cardiologist would likely order a CT scan of your carotids (the arteries in your neck) &amp; also check whether type 2 diabetes is contributing to the plaque formation  Starting you on a statin ( a cholesterol lowering drug) would certainly be a option.

since fish oil contains fat, is it still good for you - does it cause or prevent plaque? taking 2g for dry eye/bp/cholesterol and it seems to help.

Omega6/omega3  ratio: The key is a proper ratio of omega 6 to omega 3.  Most intake too much omega 6 fat and too little omega 3 fats.

Cholesterol tx: Arterial plaques are called atherosclerosis, a fancy term suggesting cholesterol build up on the arterial wall. Although, the damage done is irreversible, stabilization of the existing plaques and prevention of new ones is paramount. Cholesterol poor diet, cholesterol lowering meds and Aspirin should be strongly considered. Treatment of potential comorbidities such as diabetes and BP must be done.

: Repetitive head injuries, such as in football or hockey may lead over time to Chronic Post-Traumatic Encephalopathy.  Changes similar to Alzheimer's Disease become present in the peripheral cerebral cortex, and amyloid plaques have been noted.  These changes are thought to explain the cognitive deterioration.

i have a lump on the bottom of my tongue. it's not painful and it has what seems to be a white head, the color of plaque. should i worry?

Don't panic: The area below the tongue has a high density  of salivary glands.  Sounds like you may have an occluded salivary gland.   Sometimes these occlusions clear on there own with salivary secretions.  They tend to occur when you are dehydrated.   Drink lots of water. And see your dentist for an examination  of the bump
