Red White And Blue?: Yes. The first guess would be a "viral" or viral-like infection. If it lasts longer than a month I'd get more concerned and want to be seen by an opthalmologist (eye doctor). It probably spread to the other eye from an inadvertent touching or rubbing. As long as your vision is OK and there isn't a bunch of goo dripping out or it's real painful you can afford to wait.

Pink : Pink eyes are usually a consequence of viral infections.  The approach of treating with antibiotics will not treat the condition, but may help prevent a secondary bacterial infection.  The fact that the conditioned recurred and is associated with body rashes is suggestive of other causes.  One additional consideration is allergies.  If your son has a history of allergies then the steroid drops will benefit the eye condition but not clear the rash.  I would continue to follow closely with the eye specialist and discuss the possibility of allergies.

After treatment: The best thing is to wait until the infection is completely clear, and the antibiotics are finished. You may need to replace your eye make up as well. If you were using it when you got the infection, bacteria may have contaminated the eye make-up. Using it again may re-infect your eyes.

Viral or bacterial?: If your pink eye issue to a bacterial infection, you should no longer be considered contagious after 24-48 hours after starting the antibiotic drops. If, however, your pink eye is due to viral infection, you are likely to be contagious for as long as you are having symptoms.

General rule: The general rule is 24 hours on meds is enough to decrease the risk of spread in the daycare setting.

Return to your doc: If something doesn't respond, it either means needs more time, incorrect diagnosis, wrong dosage, resistant to therapy, or more than one problem.  Typically, for a viral pink eye, topical antibiotics are just prescribed for prevention of secondary bacterial infection.

Moderate: If your shook hands without washing your hands after touching your eyes you could give it to people. But, worse, they can blame you even if you don't touch them. Pink eye has a reputation.

Reinfection: is probably the cause. Clean your cellphone too when you wash with alcohol based cleanser.

Conjunctivitis: This is often viral or allergic in origin. You can use polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) eye drops, but they may not work. Unless you are having purulent discharge or know that you have been exposed to a particular bacterial pathogen it is not likely that this is bacterial.  Good luck.
