Recurrence?: If your surgery was with in a year or so, make sure it is not recurrence.Go back to your operating surgeon for a check up.

i had a pilonidal cyst excision in jan 2013.  over the past 3 days, my scar has become painful and swollen.  could this be a new cyst?

Yes: It could be a recurrence of your pilonidal cyst and it seems to be inflamed or infected. A general surgeon is best qualified to evaluate,advise and treat you for this problem, but if you are unable to see one as soon as possible, head to the hospital emergency room and their personnel will contact one if deemed necessary.

See your surgeon : There may be residual cyst or foreign body such as hair strand underneath that cause periodic inflammation and may need to re-excise it.

m/27 pilonidal cyst below coccyx. first formed at age 17.  asymptomatic for years.  is it safe to leave untreated?  will further tissue be destroyed? by what mechanism do cysts destroy tissue? why is pit picking not popular in us?  thank you!

A cyst, or : abscess usually develops in an area where there is a "potential" space, and in the case at hand there was a small defect of closure in the ectoderm as a fetus.  If there is no redness, heat, pain or drainage you can leave alone, or have electively removed but try not to manipulate (pick).  This causes micro abrasions of the skin and introduces bacteria that can lead to acute infection

having pain in butt cleft. when i squeeze buttocks, tenderness in the tissues. i palpate the bones, nothing, no pain. i pull the cleft muscle sideways, achy pain. no superficial signs of pilonidal cyst tho. m27. scared about chordoma. please help?

Yes: You may exercise with a pilonidal cyst as long as you keep the cyst covered with a bandage and you do not have fever, chills or excessive drainage.
