hit my head hard on the crown 3 days ago. was diagnosed with concussion without any imaging. also hit my head hard but barely developed a bump. is this normal? have had persistent headache since the hit?

Accepted Answer

: Imaging is rarely needed after minor head trauma when the review of symptoms and exam are consistent with that label. Even minor head trauma can give rise to significant headache of and on for a week or more. Follow up with your regular doc and keep track of any dizziness, memory loss, brain fog, etc. and contact them when this spooks you.

Flu season: Flu season has arrived :'(  Your symptoms sound like typical symptoms from the common cold. At this point, you should focus on rest and hydration. The flu typically lasts 3-7 days. Make sure someone is around to help take care of you, until you feel well. If you do not start to improve in the next few days, I would certainly suggest going to see your Doctor. Hang in there. my sister 22 years has a persistent headache for the last 4years now. she fell on the ground on the back of her head 4years ago. she has tried several pain killers but no change. could it be an intra cranial hematoma?

: Inappropriate use of analgesics can cause chronic headache. Your sister needs to be evaluated thoroughly by a neurologist for the correct diagnosis and appropriate therapy. Good luck.

ive had a persistent headache, varying in intensity and placement, for the past 7 days. ibuprofen sometimes helps, but not always, it alleviated after lightly hitting my head on the wall in frustration, but did come back. what could be the problem?

: Dehydration is a frequent cause of headache.  It is summer and with high humidity and temperature, and increase in fluid intake may alleviate your headache.  Also refrain from anything that dehydrates, such as alcohol, saunas or whirlpools.  Check your blood pressure and if out of range contact your family doctor.   relax neck with exercise and massage.

mild, persistent headache / head pressure in a small specific part of my head (base of skull on right side only) for 4 or 5 days, with short periods of nausea, neck pain pain is worse at night but not severe. wondering if i should be concerned?

: You may have cervicogenic headache. Just try ibuprofen OTC 200 mg x 3 with foods every 6-8 hours as needed for 2-3 days only, change your current pillow to a flatter one and do neck exercise several times a day along with local heat or cold compress. If symptom does not improve after 3 days you should see your doctor by then.

banged my eye, had to have gape glued shut. a day later new i have a persistent headache, black eye, upper swelling, tender. could it be broken?

Orbital fracture...: can only be ruled out in person w/ exam &amp; x-ray. Depakote can cause heavy bleeding/bruising. Would get CT/MRI of eye region itself if, due to soft tissue swelling/bruising, it seems to impinge on nerves &amp; muscles required for eye movement. Damage to the eye carries a significant infectious risk as well since the optic nerve/vascular complex perforates the skull and leads right into brain tissue.

See an ENT doctor: Your persistent headache and leaking from one side of the nose intermittently with the other symptoms that you have may be signs of a leaking spinal fluid. You need to see a ear nose and throat Doctor who will then order a CAT scan and some other tests. Because of your symptoms you should do this as soon as possible.

had a ct scan for a persistent headache a few months ago. it was normal but since that episode of headaches i occasionally see a flicker of light in my left eye, like a speck of glitter. should i be worried about a brain tumor, even with a normal ct?

Do not worry: You may possess classical migraine headaches and the described "flicker of light" is consistent with an aura.  There is NO evidence to substantiate a brain tumor, and the normal CT scan should fully reassure regarding structural brain disease.  Discuss further with your doctor, management of such spells.
