Other possible causes include aspiration and sinusitis with post nasal drip. Sometimes inflammation of the ear drum may be associated with a persistent cough. Asthma can be associated with a cough.

It might be caused by an input message to the brain (e.g. Infection) or an unnecessary executive message from an irritable brain. Strangely enough it can be caused by sugar intake or even cow's milk. This is partcularly true if he coughs in his sleep without awakening.

No...: A non-productive persistent cough is likely due to bronchospasm from any cause, gerd, post-nasal drip or a combination of these factors. It is not due to infection so antibiotics would be of no benefit. If you smoke, you need to quit to decrease the airway inflammation and decrease your risk of copd, malignancy, etc.
