Many causes: There are many possible causes of persistent cough lasting more than 3 weeks. If this is occurring after a viral illness, you may have chronic bronchitis or pneumonia. Other possible causes include aspiration and sinusitis with post nasal drip. Sometimes inflammation of the ear drum may be associated with a persistent cough. Asthma can be associated with a cough.
