pepto bismol bottle says do not take with ulcer...why?

Salycilate: Pepto contains bismuth subsalycilate. Aspirin is also a salycilate.  Because they both have that in them, it was assumed(a long time ago) that it might cause more bleeding, but that has never been proven.  Pepto also turns the stool black.  Ulcer bleeding can also turn the stool black.  So, pepto covers up an important sign of bleeding ulcer complacation. Single use not bad, chronic use not good

No: This is safe to take with ulcers but it can lead to black stools which can sometimes mimic a bleeding ulcer.

Yes: There should be no interaction between these two medications, but be aware that peptobismol can cause your stools to be black- the same color that is caused by a bleeding ulcer. Maalox, gelusil or mylanta won't do this.

Yes, can combine: Advil (ibuprofen) is an NSAID, it works to reduce inflammation and fever. Pepto Bismol has an ingredient that is related to Apirin, which also reduces inflammation and fever. Both of these meds can also cause a decrease in the ability to clot. When taken together this is amplified. This combination should not be used in persons who have any bleeding disorder. They can cause stomach problems.
