Herpangina?: This may be an infection with the coxsackie virus. It's miserable, affects the back of the throat with blisters / little ulcers, and is something one simply has to recover from. Vigorous physical exercise may be a big help right now. Best wishes.

Depends on the cause: Mumps parotitis is self limited and requires no treatment.  Bacterial parotid infection usually suggests other abnormalities and my require antibiotic treatment as well correction of associated defect, e.g., duct obstruction.

It's not genetic: Or contagious.  Often due to dehydration, stones or strictures in the gland or occasionally an autoimmune problem like sjogren's syndrome.  You would not expect anyone else in the family to get it.

Recurrent parotitis: You need to have a parotid sialogram, an x-ray of the salivary gland duct to rule out a stone in the duct system.  You should also get blood work to rule out a collagen-vascular disease.  Seek a physician's attention.

Depends on cause: Viral parotitis like that due to the mumps virus has no treatment but bacterial parotitis, often due to staphylococci, is usually found in patients who are dehydrated causing blocks in the parotid duct. Therapy is an appropriate antimicrobial plus good hydration and a sialogogue, a stimulant of salivation like lemon drops. An abscess can form needing drainage.

Painful: Parotitis is the inflammation of the parotid gland. It is usually caused by dehydration and sometimes salivar gland stones. Patients experience swelling and sometimes significant pain. Treatments requires: warm compress, massage to area, rehydration, sialogogues (anything that makes ur mouth water-sour candy) and antibiotics. Can be worse in diabetics or those with weak immune system.

In chronic or recurrent cases it is important to rule out a blockage due to salivary stones or tumors. Ents may also perform parotid surgery (gland removal or sialendoscopy).

Cool compress n gum: Sugarless gum or licorice to stimulate the parotid gland to continue working, cool compresses for comfort, and Ibuprofen and or tylenol (acetaminophen).
