Nervous system: There may be a number of contributors to panic attacks.  One is that the body’s nervous system is engaging it’s fight or flight response. Genetics & stress are two other factors.

Sx’s can include: sense of severe anxiety or panic, chest tightness or pain, rapid or pounding heartbeat, areas of numbness or pins ; needles type sensation, hot flashes or chills ; heavy perspiration. There may be a tickle sensation in the stomach or nausea, feeling dizzy or faint ; physical shaking. The person may fear that they are going crazy, they are out of control or that.

Aborting panic: If you can find a quiet place - do so. Breath in slowly &amp; deeply through your nostrils. Fill your lungs with air (but not to the point of discomfort).  Hold for a count of five then slowly begin to exhale through an open mouth. Repeat at least 12 times, longer if you need to. If you haven't been assessed for your panic/ anxiety - that would be prudent. Take care.

No: People having panic attacks typically feel like they're going to die, but they don't.  Anxiety and panic produce many physical symptoms, and people with anxiety are usually extremely sensitive to body sensations . . . .Usually interpreting them as indicators of dire illness.  Panic attacks can definitely be treated.  If not already working with a psychiatrist on yours, please consider it.

Manage, not cure: True panic attacks are difficult to cure; we manage them. Therapy can help if there are fears under the surface that need to be addressed.  Attacks can be helped with beta blockers to reduce fast heart rate and shaking; xanax-type meds can worsen things if taken more than very rarely (say once every couple weeks). Ssris are the med of choice, usually in higher doses.
