DSM IV defintion: A discrete period of intense fear or discomfort, in which four (or more) of the following symptoms developed abruptly and reached a peak within 10 minutes: 1) palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate 2) sweating 3) trembling or shaking 4) sensations of shortness of breath or smothering 5) feeling of choking 6) chest pain or discomfort (cont. On comments).

Anxiety: Panic attacks-when they re-occur, are part of panic disorder.It's fairly common as are the anxiety disorders in general. During a panic attack, one may feel as though they are going crazy or losing their minds. The person may feel short of breath, have chest pains & heart palpitations. Some go the er, afraid they are having a heart attack. There are excellent, non-addicting available treatments.
