Not really: All it means is that you don't have pancreatitis at the time of the blood draw. If the pancreas were damaged by previous episodes of pancreatitis, the lipase would still be normal.

Accepted Answer

No other causes: Of lipase elevation except pancreatitis.  You probably had a mild case that went away before you had the test, because it takes several days to a week for lipase test to return to normal.

what are the best scans to determine if you have had any pancreas damage in the past from pancreatitis? also if my lipase was 486 two weeks ago, is it worth rechecking?

: A CT scan would provide evidence of calcifications or anatomic abnormalities in the pancreas at the expense of typical radiation involved. Serial lipase measurements are recommended in order to assess for either progression or normalization and in order to better understand what might be causing the process.

Lipase: It may mean inflamation of the pancreas, inflamation of pancreas may come from alcohol abuse, infection, tumor or too much fat( hypertriglyceridemia) in the blood stream.

Lipase: those numbers arent that high, but you may need a ct scan of pancreas.

Lipase elevations: Can come from different causes, two of which are pancreas and kidney problems.  Usually, very high lipase levels along with elevated amylase levels are seen in acute pancreatitis, whereas lipase elevations in kidney diseases are not that high.  Pancreatitis can show on ct scan, and kidney problems, can elevate BUN and creatinine levels.  Ask your dr about specific advice.

Acute : This is much more likely to be acute.  Hypertriglyceridemia and gallstones can cause pancreatitis in people who don't drink alcohol.

Other cause: Has your doctor considered other causes for your pain?
Since your lipase is normal this is not likely to be due to pancreatitis, but I would suggest having labs rechecked in 24 hours if symptoms persist.
There are many other causes of abdominal pain and nausea/fever which should be explored

: Normal. Lowish lipase means nothing.

History &amp; physical: If the pancreas is inflamed or damaged, amylase and lipase are often up, and it's not subtle. If your pancreas isn't functioning properly, you'll be losing weight with no explanation and probably have diarrhea / steatorrhea. Your physician can check your stool for pancreatic enzymes. It's rare but with a suggestive history, a screen may show something that could respond to enzyme replacement.
