a year ago i underwent distal pancreatectomy surgery. i was wondering if ingesting marijuana edibles in a small amount would be harmful in any way. i am asking this besides the common side effects of weed, specifically for my pancreas.

Yes: Like all medicines, pancreatic enzymes can produce side effects such as diarrhea, pain, bloating. Only take medications  if needed and under the supervision of a physician.

in general, is gemzar (gemcitabine) as chemo for pancreatic cancer more potent with many more side effects that most other agents, like 5-fu?

One of the best drug: Gemzar (gemcitabine) was the first approved drug and was superior to 5-FU for treating this cancer . So it continues to be the key drugs in the newer  combinatiions being developed(or recently developed such as NAb-Paclitaxel+Gemzar (gemcitabine)). It does not have any serious toxicities just lowers the blood counts which is mostly inconsequential.

Need to know more: Your question can't be adequately answered without more information.  I would need to know the precise pathology classification to tell you if there was a chance for recurrence or spread of your tumor.  After any surgery on the pancreas there are risks for post-operative damage to adjacent organs and for malabsorption syndromes because of reduced output of pancreatic enzymes.

have divitriculitis--off & on for years pain is not severe, but sometimes is on left side and radiates to the back. sometimes it is in the middle of the abdomen and sometimes it is on the right side feels like gall bladder. pancrease be involved?

Hida scan: The normal tests for abdominal pain in the right upper abdomen can include a sonogram and a ct scan.  A hida scan with an ejection fraction will evaluate the function of the gallbladder.  I will refer patients to a gastroenterologist, as well, for evaluation of the stomach for ulcer disease, gastric reflux and other stomach problems.

2011 had vp shunt placed. had sterile peritonitis. now have enlarged head of pancrease (pancrelipase). elarged right side of liver 17.5 cm. multiple lymph nodes seen?

May not be due to   : Vp shunt , most likely done to relive intracranial pressure , current condition needs careful evaluation , including biopsy speak to your doctor (s)  will give you the plan of care.

Any symptoms?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your level is normal.

No: However, transplant of small cellular components of the pancreas which make the insulin, called islets, are done in a few experimental centers around the country.  In addition, some patients can do well with an external artificial Insulin pump which delivers Insulin over a two day period and has to be adjusted less frequently than given Insulin shots.

is it acceptable for someone with hepatitis b & t2dm to donate a kidney? when do we have artificial pancreases (pancrelipase) & kidneys?

Accepted Answer

No: Hepatitis b will be transmitted to the recipient . The liver and kidneys are too complex to reproduce artificially.
