Pain under ribs: Hello ~ I note you had a colonoscopy on 2/4/16 and now have pain under rib cage and shoulder pain. A rare complication of colonoscopy is rupture of the colon and more so if there is inflammatory bowel disease. If you perforate the colon you would get air in abdomen and it will rise to under diaphragm giving you pain you are getting. Go back to GI doc and have this checked thx

i have had pain inside my left rib cage  now for a year. i've had a colonoscopy , ct scan, ultrasound with nothing abnormal. could it be my spleen?

Doubtful: Abnormality of spleen (anatomically) would show on sono, and/or ct. Functional abnormality of spleen would show on blood count. Can't tell here what it is, possibly lung, pleua, diaphragm, or musculoskeletal. Follow up with md.

: Musculoskeletal causes for such pain are many times hard to discover and imaging to include spine may help in understanding the origin for the pain. Extending work up also to include kidneys in imaging fields may provide additional information.

i suffer with  abdominal pain around the navel between the rib cage and lower abdomen. i had a colonoscopy which ended up with an ibs diagnosis. help?

Treatable: Although we can't cure ibs-irritable bowel syndrome- you and your dr have many options to try and control the symptoms.I recommend you keep a very careful diary of everything you eat and find the "triggers"that aggrivate your gut.We know stress makes it worse;can you get help here?If diarrhea is most problematic we can use antispasmodics;if constipation we can use stool softeners or even mild laxi.

diagnosed with chronic gastritis by egd/colonoscopy. no h pylori. have changed diet, no nsaids and no alcohol. am getting dull pains below left rib cage and in left flank. is this normal during the healing process or should i ask for more testing?

: If the symptom characteristics are the same but less intensity, you are probably okay. However, your pain location is not typical for gastritis. You did not mention if you are taking any medication for gastritis after the diagnosis.

Need more info: Not enough detail to provide reasoned response. Age? Sex? Known medical problems? Current medications? When started? Any injury/trauma/new exercise or unusual straining. Any fever, nausea, cough, URI symptoms, GI symptoms? Previous history of same problem? Worsening activities/movements. Relieving activities/movements/ meds. A shot in the dark without more information or a star trek tricorder.

Determine cause 1st: Most of the time cough can cause rib pain fro the trauma of coughing. One needs to determine the cause of the coug as well. Occ someone will fracture a rib from a severe cough. Talk to your doctor and deterimne cause of the cough and they may prescribe an anti inflammatory medication for this.

Rib pain: Real pain after coughing is most commonly due to straining of the muscles of the chest wall and can be treated with anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen and heating pads or other comfort measures. It is important however to differentiate this from chest pains that might be of cardiac origin. If you feel that you're having pain behind your breastbone associate with the shortness of breath sweats weakness radiation down the arm or other signs of a heart attack please take medical attention immediately.
