feet swell and pain under rib cage after alcohol. any ideas?

Just theory; see MD: Are you a frequent drinker? Heavy drinker? Binge drink? Eat poorly? Were you immobile for a long time? Pain under the rib cage makes me think either acute alcohol-induced hepatitis, chronic fatty liver or possible PE (pulmonary embolus). Foot swelling is consistent with venous insufficiency, hypoalbuminuria (unhappy liver/malnutrition) &amp; maybe even DVT (deep venous thrombosis; a risk for PE).

Sounds like GERD: Gastroesophageal reflux is both common and unpleasant. The specific triggers you mention are the most commonly associated foods/substances that increase reflux symptoms. Another possibility is gastritis or even Helicobater pylori infection of the stomach (which leads to ulcers). The best way to establish the diagnosis is with testing through your doctor and the treatment depends upon what is found.

for the past year, sometimes i have been getting pain in my rib cage both sides which radiates to my back.  with drinking less, i notice it happens more after i drink alcohol.

Could be many things: but if it is getting worse after drinking, I would be concerned that it might be pancreatitis.  Anything in what is called the "retroperitoneum" - very posterior organs like the pancreas, a short part of the duodenum, the kidneys - may radiate to the back.  I would see your health care provider for a full evaluation, including blood work and possibly imaging of the pancreas. Stop alcohol!

Alcohol: Your upper GI tract and accessory organs are very susceptible to the ravages of alcohol and some people suffer ill effects more than others.  The organs most likely to be effected are the stomach, duodenum, pancreas and liver. The liver and gall bladder are the right upper quadrant and in your case inflammation of the liver may be the most likely cause,  Give up the alcohol it is not worth it.

Get checked out: Right side of your abdomen under rib cage is where your liver and gall bladder live. A good doc can examine your liver to see if it's tender.  A blood test can reveal irritation to the liver cells or gall bladder.
If organs are ok, Structurally, there can be dysfunction of the tissue/nerve/bone system in that area--an osteopath or PT or good yoga session might help.

?fractured rib: It sounds like you may have fractured a rib and perhaps as it healed it scared down and the scar impinges on a costal (rib) nerve.  Not sure what the alcohol does, but maybe it relaxes you and allows the rib fracture region to move downward and make the impingement.  Other possibilities.  You need an MRI of the area in question to be sure.

Needs exam: With the history you provided you need to be seen and examined, probably an ultrasound of your abdomen is warranted after being seen, good luck

Need more info.: Structures in that area are spleen, kidney, diaphragm, and intestines. True muscle spasm that comes on after exercise is most likely diaphragm and will resolve with conditioning. Other causes need to be evaluated by your doctor.
