A specialty of medic: The purpose of pain management is as it sounds to manage a person;s pain. If done right, a cause should be looked for first.  If done right, it shouldn't be just medication but rather include lifestyle modifications, psychological or behavioral interventions, exercise or physical therapy and sometimes alternative treatments too like acupuncture.

Fellowship: Fellowship is an additional year or two of training in a specific field.

what do i do if my pain managment doctor wont listn when i tell him my medication isnt helping?

Accepted Answer

Communicate: Make sure the dr isn't waiting to allow med(s) time to work ("therapeutic trial") or some other valid reason. If not, specifically ask how your excess pain will be addressed. If no answer, or not to your liking, you will need to find a new pain dr.

1: An excellent treatment for failed back surgery is a spinal cord stimulator.  In my practice the number one reason for implantation of a stimulator is failed back surgery.  Each of the companies that make them (medtronic, boston scientific, and st jude neuromodulation) all have excellent patient information sites.

is demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) 50mg a good pain managment drug? please advise!

It is a good: painkiller. Narcotic analgesics are the most efficacious agents available for relief of acute pain. Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) is opioid and good painkiller. When pain is accompanied by inflammation, NSAIDs are more effective than opioids in managing pain. Ask your doctor for more information.

surgery 4 osteochondroma 6yrs ago on my right humerous, have extreme pain daily. asked a doctor and they want me to take pain managment? whats that?

?your surgeon: I'd speak to your surgeon first. You may need further evaluation. Once everyone is happy there's not a new or recurrent problem, then pain management would be appropriate. In the meantime, it's ok to use analgesics, otc or as prescribed, until you can see your surgeon. Good luck.

which is a better pain managment for patellar tendonitis..prp or cortisone injections or hyperbarics or just exercises? i see my doctor friday.

Find the cause first: Start with the cause for overloading the anterior knee (tight hamstrings, flat feet, weak quads) and address these first to prevent a recurrence. Initial treatment focuses on rest, unloading with a patellar band, pt, orthotics, and oral anti- inflammatories (if tolerated).  I am not a big fan of steroid injections near the tendon due to risk of rupture. Prp is promising but still in its infancy.

i am a 34 y/o female who has completely lost her sex drive, i have hypothroidism and take synthroid (thyroxine) 224 mcg & methadone 60mg for pain managment. ?

Need more evaluation: Sex drive issues in women can be very complex. First see your gyn or primary doctor to make sure all your hormone levels are ok and that there is nothing physically causing it . Some patients on long term pain medication can have low testosterone which may be a cause. Also, patients with chronic pain are prone to depression which can contribute. Medications may also be a cause.

Talk to your MD: If you are having any worsening pain, numbness, or tingling, or difficulty with bowel/bladder function you should seek urgent medical attention. Talk to your pain doctor about your worsening pain and need for possible further imaging studies; and or review/change of pain medication/ or other modalities.

what's next? hip xray shows nothing. groin pain, surgery shows nothing. webmd suggests acetabular labral tear from symptoms.  pain managment no help

Fresh opinion: If your orthopedic doc and pain management docs are no longer helping you, you might want to find a new team of docs that will shed some fresh thought into your situation. I'm surprised you had hip surgery before you had an MRI of that hip. Was it just exploratory? I'm not sure exactly where you live but consider trying to find an osteopathic doctor who offers manipulation to help your pain.
