Check for cancer: A pap smear is a test that is used to screen women for cervical cancer. First, the doc will ask you to undress from the waist down and lie on the table with your feet propped up. The doc will then insert a speculum into the vagina, which opens up so the cervix can be visualized. Next, the doc uses a brush to take a small sample of the cells lining the cervix, and the procedure is done.

No: Bleeding does not affect the appearance of the critical cells.  The current liquid methods of making pap smears usually get rid of the blood.

Don't worry: You will be asked to undress and placed into a gown. They will have you lay on the exam table and place your legs in sturips. The doctor will sit between your legs and use a speculum, a device to help view your cervix, and insert it into the vagina. Although uncomfortable, hopefully not by much and brief. Once the cervix is seen, a sample is taken with a small brush.

No: The pap test uses a brush-like device to "sweep" up cells from the cervix.  There is no "clipping.".

Cervix fragile: It is not unusual for a woman to spot or have a little light bleeding when a pap smear is done.  This is because some of the cells of the cervix can be fragile, and the brush used in the pap can make those cells bleed.

It should be for you: Current guidelines for women 30-65 are either pap alone every 3 years, or pap plus hpv every 5 years. I favor co-testing with pap and hpv since the risk of a precancer or cancer is very low when both tests are negative.

Not related: Why did you have a pap smear if you are not sexually active? Break in hymen during pap smear and painful sex are not related to each other. Using a lubricant for sex may lessen discomfort.

Bleeding: the most common cause is a friable cervix (bleeds easily) and this can be due to pregnancy, infection, trauma from sex and hormonal changes.  Other causes include cervicitis (STD), polyps and the most common cause is idiopathic (meaning no specific reason or cause)

cause by the presence of a cervical polyp
(a benign condition) or a cervical erosion, 
which cause the cervix to bleed during or
after sexual intercourse.
