This varies a bit: From clinician to clinician - but common agents used in combination in my day to day practice of anesthesia include - propofol, brevital, nubain, fentanyl, remifentanil, versed, ketamine, & ihalation agent such as nitrous oxide & sevoflurane.  A combination of medications allows for the use of smaller doses of each (compliment each other).  Lower doses reduces potential negative effects of each.

General: describes being totally asleep and  endotracheal describes the tube that is placed through your mouth into your trachea to allow you to breathe and anesthetic gases to be administered

Anesthesia is not : Anesthesia is not the issue.  You should wait several weeks to make sure there is no infection.

It should: Local anesthesia needs to numb the teeth and the bones because both have nerve endings and sensation which means both can experience pain.  Extractions can cause much bone trauma and if it were not numb then it would hurt a lot.  Many times the tooth to be removed is already non-vital and so it is primarily the bone being anesthitized anyway.

two erupted wisdom teeth might have to be extracted but i have medicaid. does it cover general anesthesia for oral surgery? i can't with only local.

Erupted wisdom : Teeth are sometimes more routine to remove.  Not always, but sometimes.  Dont be too afraid. Your anxiety may be helped by some simple oral medications from your pharmacy. Ask your dental surgeon about a prescription to help w your anxiety.  Medicaid is unlikely to cover general anesthesia for this procedure and the oral medication is a good substitute for many patients. Good luck.

Call surgeon: I do not know what medications your surgeon will be administering, so to advise you one way or another would not be prudent. Please call your surgeon and get his/her ok as to what meds you can take the night before.

i just had surgery under general anesthesia (not oral surgery) and now the tip of my tongue is numb and my lower lip is beginning to feel a bit funny. the surgery was almost a week ago and there's been no improvement. how long before i can feel?

: I ask what kind or surgery you were having, these symptoms may be the result of the intubation equipment. Might I suggest you call the doctors that treated you and ask them what they feel might have caused this effect.

: When you can do it without any discomfort, do it.
For healthy diet: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/., exercise 30 minutes/day, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs.

i have an appt for november with an endocrinologist. the issue is ill be put under general anesthesia in 2 weeks for oral surgery and im worried ill have complications with anesthesia since i could have a hormone secreting tumor. any advise?

: I find it unlikely a general anesthetic would trigger any change in such a tumor. Nor would it make you at more risk for a given procedure. Since removal is one of the simplest ways of curing the effects of such a tumor, I would look forward to a better life after the work is done.

Increase heart rate: Nicotine causes increase in heart rate and blood pressure. It is recommended not to smoke at least 12 hrs before surgery to reduce theses effects on cardiovascular system.
