Which part?: The most common reason for this would be carpal tunnel in which case your 1st 3 or 4 fingers would go numb.  Try a carpal tunnel splint at night for a while.  It is possible you might need an injection in your wrist.  See a pmr doctor or orthopedic surgeon.

Pain and numbness: First see a practitioner who can do a thorough neurological examination to determine if a problem in your neck is causing both symptoms.  This is particularly important if one shoulder in pain, and both hands numb.  There could be other reasons, but exam by good neurologist would sort this out.  Then pt for neck and/or shoulder might be best approach.  Get checked first.

Diabetes?: You should see a physician. The numbness could be from uncontrolled diabetes. It also could be a neck injury or a reaction to a medication.

Splint: Rest, night splint, vitamin b6 100mg / day, over the counter anti-inflammatory meds and ergonomic changes to work space.  If there is no improvement see a hand surgeon.

Carpal tunnel: If occurring exclusively at night, may still be carpal tunnel.  Compressive nerve syndromes get worst at rest, but so can degeneration of nerves, or neuropathy.  Need nerve conditions.

i have numbness in my hands after sunbed and am takin doxycycline?

Prob unrelated, but: Bad idea. Tetracycline drugs, including doxycycline, are photosensitizing- give you a worse sunburn, or rash, in resppnse to sun exposure. Nnumbness due to other causes, i.e. Nerve or vascular (blood vessel). Call your doc, especially if not promptly resolved. Don't do that again.

Stop smoking: Smoking is certainly a possibility, or at least a contributing factor.

You are lucky because you can answer your own question easily.
Stop smoking for 4 weeks and see if there is a difference.
Put the same amt of $ in clear jar each day, at the end of the week--treat yourself to something.  You may be surprised at what you can get while also making improvements to your health.

See your doctor: It is possible that you may have carpal tunnel syndrome.
Your doctor will take a detailed history and perform a physical exam.
If your doctor determines that you have carpal tunnel syndrome, there are multiple treatment options available.

i've had periodic numbness in my hands for years especially when im tying fishing knots or sim activities i sometimes feel it in my elbows it has been getting worse i don't get it while typing at work ?

Numbness: In hands associated with repeatative activity may be nerve compression resulting in carpel tunnel synd..The elbow also has a superficial nerve that can be compressed resulting in numbness.

Accepted Answer

Yes: This could mean that the cervical neck bones are pinching off the spinal cord. There ae other reasons too such as carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, neuropathy. See a neurologist soon for some tests.
