Neck or wrist: Neck or wrist. Either you did pinched the nerve responsible for the index finger in the neck.the other possibility is the wrist by putting pressure against the median nerve , but that will cause numbness to other fingers as well. If persistent see your doctor

Carpal tunnel: A common cause is carpal tunnel syndrome caused by thickened wrist ligaments pressing on nerves entering the fingers. A hand surgeon can evaluate you for this and discuss treatment options like a brace,physical therapy,corticosteroid injection or surgery. A neurologist can perform a test(EMG) to document the diagnosis if needed.

Numb finger: There are many many causes of a numbness, caused by a nerve being compromised....Pressure from habitually holding an object in one way, or on the nerve farther away, from cysts or spurs. Some disease like diabetes and thyroid disorders can predispose to nerves being injured  the duration depends on the cause.  Consult a neurologist. Median Nerve Problem: Accept my sympathy for your back problems.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects this finger area but only on the palm side. Here a wrist splint can help. But if the back of the finger is also involved, a cervical disc is suspect. The Rx for that is in my book"Stop Neck Pain and Headache Now" available thru your book store. More exotic nerve problems can be a cause but they are unlikely.

Carpel tunnel: The nerves in your hand are being pinched under a small band of ligament type tissue. Its from the typing and maintaining the hand posture required to do so. Start wearing a simple wrist brace see an orthopedic surgeon for a workup if you need to type for job then a simple surgery would resolve this issue
