Not advised: Please do not stop your antidepressant without checking with the prescribing physician. Many conditions that nortriptyline (pamelor) are used to treat tend to recur, especially if the medication is stopped too quickly. Abrupt discontuation of nortriptyline can result in nausea, headache and insomnia and uncommonly even delirium/psychosis. The taper would depend on dose and duration of treatment.

Do not stop suddenly: Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant, available only by prescription.  It can make you dizzy or drowsy.  Your doctor should monitor your use regularly.  Do not stop use suddenly, your doctor will need to decrease you dose gradually before you stop it completely.  You may need to stop using it several days before you have surgery.  Let any doctor or dentist who treats you know about it.

Yes: 25 mg is the minimum dose. Even if you have been taking it for many years, the only negative effect would be trouble sleeping since that is what you were taking it for in the first place.

Yes. And, no.: Yes - both of those are possible side effects (amid a long list of others). But
No, you shouldn't just go cold turkey w/out medical guidance. Set up an appointment ASAP. If there's a wait ask for tapering instructions during your call. Keep a record of the call and directions. W/drawal effects are risky too - as you seem to be sensitive. Be careful. Ask about risks before starting a med. Best!

Too fast: There are withdrawal symptoms and even the risk for seizures with abrupt stopping of both of those medications. I suggest you discuss this with your doctor today and have a plan for tonight.

: Your concerns are indeed very unusual as an adverse reaction to nortryptyline, but idiosyncratic reactions could exist.  Talk to your doctor if it is wise to discontinue or switch.

: You don't mention the diagnosis for which amitriptyline is prescribed. 20 mgs is a small dose. There are much better antidepressants available if your diagnosis is depression. You could always get a second opinion if you're not satisfied with your diagnosis, care or choice of medications.

: I’ll presume this regards IBS-D type, a challenging chronic illness.  I strongly advise a multi-treatment approach.  I would stay recommend Imipramine at 10 mg (this dose should be well tolerated), add an antispasmodic such as hyoscyamine for acute pain, be very careful with diet, and perhaps add peppermint oil as a supplement.  Many also find a bulking agent like MiraLax beneficial.
