: Tonsils are a type of immune tissue. When there is any kind of infection, they swell up with cells and antibodies, assisting your body in fighting off the infection. When cold weather sets in, many circulating common viruses cause infections such as cold and flu. There are also a few bacteria that can cause sore throats/infections. Have them checked if they don't go away in 1-2 weeks.

Common problem: Although the majority of the germs may be dead, it will take a few more days for some of the swelling to go down.Some of the spots you see are dead tissue and debris that will rub off as your appetite picks up and you eat more.The food will scrape the tonsils clean as you swallow.

Warm salt water gargles, tylenol (acetaminophen), (acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen will help. Alternate the tylenol (acetaminophen)  with the Motrin for best relieve. Not getting better, go see your healthcare provider.

If your tonsils are enlarged suddenly due to a bacterial infection (tonsillitis) then you may need antibiotics.  If your tonsils are always large even when you are not sick, you could have them removed if you have sleep apnea. If only one tonsil is large, you should be seen by an ENT surgeon.

In the old days: We suggest gargling with warm salt water and possible mouthwash to reduce bacteria.  I am not sure how effective this is.  We dont do tonsillectomy anymore.
