i have a query about a testicular issue. when doing a self examination, i can distinctly feel that my left epididymis is thicker and larger than my right one. there is also a more rounded lump like butt to the epididymis. is this normal?

Epididymis : Please see you doctor to make sure all is well.  No way of knowing for sure w/out an exam by him or her.  This could be due to infection or simply a difference between one side and the other.  Safety and peace of mind comes from a doc visit.  Peace and good health.

: The epididymus, which sits on the testicle, may be mildly inflamed. It would be tender to the touch if this is the problem. Avoid tight underwear &amp; tight jeans. Try wearing a jock strap at work. Avoid ejaculation. Consult your physician or a urologist for examination of the testicle if symptoms persist.

Get checked.: You may have an infection.  Other causes are possible but it's impossible to say without an exam and the appropriate lab work.  Get seen this week.  An untreated infection can cause long-term problems. Practice safe sex, too.  If you have not, get checked for sexually transmitted diseases right away.

: Random and non persistent testicular pain with normal testis and scrotum is nothing to concern and etiology is difficult to define. Gravity may be a precipitating factor so you can pay attention if that symptom usually occurs when walking or standing; if so, use underwear with athletic support as a trial. You should only concern if pain is persistent or getting worse.

Epididymal cysts, are outside the testis in the epididymis, and are benign fluid filled bumps. It can sometimes be difficult to tell by self exam, so an exam by an physician is important. Based on this exam, a scrotal ultrasound may be ordered, which will help make the diagnosis.
