Norco allergy: Norco (acetaminophen and hydrocodone)  is a narcotic pain reliever. Medication allergic reactions can include difficulty breathing, hives and swelling of face, lips, throat, mouth or tongue.

Minutes to hours: If you are allergic to a drug, the reaction usually occurs within minutes and 2 hours.  However if the reaction is a rash , it may take several days.  Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) is not a highly allergenic drug although you may get side effects from the opiate it contains.

Hydrocodone: Tapering from an opiate such as Hydrocodone from 40 to 50 mg daily could be safely and rather smoothly by reducing 10 mg daily every week. I would suggest when is down to 20 mg, to go slowly by tapering 5 mg weekly.

i had surgical procedure today and nurse gave me one norco for pain afterwards 10 hours ago. is it out of my system? is side effect / risk of stopping breathing still a chance? that scares me?

: There is zero risk of such problems with the normal post-operative doses; and if there were a problem, it would occur in the first 30 minutes after the dose, no later. Nothing to worry about. Discuss with your doctor if you remain concerned.

Continuing meds. OK: As long as you are on a stable dose of Norco, you should be fine.  I  always recommend against drinking alcohol when taking drugs containing acetaminofen. I am surprised it is helping you; I would have tried gabapentin first.

Didn't get all the q: It is  probably good to try to get off the ambien because that plus norco is a dangerous combination.  However both can be addictive.  Withdrawal should only be done with the help of a physician.

Gentle wean: Hydrocodone &amp; oxycodone aren't good long term on the liver. When was the last time your liver function (LFTs) were checked? Knowing what this # is is helpful with determining what 6 years of ingestion has done to your liver. A gentle wean over 5-6 months (cut out a dose each month) is probably what you'll need in order to come off of these without withdrawal issues. It is quite do-able.
