Context please: "nonspecific inflammation" takes on different significance if the biopsy was randomly procured from normal-looking mucosa in an asymptiomatic setting versus if the biopsy was taken from irritated colon lining in a patient in distress who may be at risk of infection, ischemia, inflammatory bowel disease.  Need a little help please with more clinical information from you.

: It is peculiar to have these abnormalities on biopsy and yet colonoscopy to otherwise be normal. Presumably you have a gastroenterologist; keep working with her. Also ask about a fecal calprotectin test. (Google it for information about calprotectin and inflammatory bowel disease.)

Colitis: Inflammation of the colon may be caused by infection or autoimmune diseases like ulcerative colitis or crohn's  disease. The latter two conditions are more chronic and the infectious causes tend to be more temporary and may completely clear up without permanent damage after successful treatment.

Visual examination: Diveticuli are usually recognizable on visual examination with colonoscopy. Inflammation is also generally recognizable visually.
Diverticulitis may also produce abnormal laboratory tests reflecting inflammation. Inflammation of the colonic mucosa is also diagnosable visually but usually a biopsy is done for confirmation by a pathologist.

There are many things that can cause colon inflammation such as infection, diseases like Crohns, and many other things (some common , some rare)

(L) abdomen inflamed: Do you eat many nuts or a lot of popcorn or things with tiny seeds? Do you have a history of diverticulosis or rectal bleeding when you eat the things mentioned above? Any change in bms? Any history of trauma to left abdomen? See fp for evaluation, imaging &/or testing if necessary, treatment.

Possibly: Long-standing colonic inflammation as seen in chronic ulcerative colitis and crohn's colitis can increase your risk for colon cancer and is a known risk factor for colon and rectal cancer. Patients with pancolits (involving the whole colon and rectum) should begin colonoscopic surveillance after 8 yrs of disease and left-sided colitis after 15 years.
