See below: If your fasting glucose is elevated but you are not diabetic you have about 60% of preventing progression of the process. You should lose about 10% of your body weight, more if you are overweight, exercise at least 30 minutes/day, 5 days/week and gradually increase the intensity of exercise. i have 329 ast and 79 alt and fasting glucose of 103, total cholesterol of 200/ldl 122.  normal range of all other factors tested.  thoughts?

Elevated AST/ALT: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your AST/ALT are elevated, If you drink alcohol, stop entirely and retest in 3-4 months.

recently had a fasting glucose of 118 (during a time of high stress). then had ac1 - 5.2 (normal) & non-fasting glucose - 119. should i ask for ogtt?

Options: Hi. Since an OGTT includes a fasting glucose in the test, you could do the OGTT to get both fasting and challenged glucose. A1c and random glucose are the two least sensitive tests for early glycemic abnormalities. Eat healthily and exercise regularly. Good luck!

Variable: Some people will develop the neuropathy in their feet (burning, stinging) before their sugars become significantly abnormal.  Often episodes of hypoglycemia (low sugars) precede overt diabetes.  People who are developing type II DM will experience weight gain, fatigue, possibly increased minor infections.

OK for now: Your husband's glucose is normal (i assume it was a lab test out of a vein rather than a finger stick) but he's overweight and that makes him more likely to develop diabetes in the future (along with high BP and cholesterol) pacticularly if he has a positive family history. Diet and exercise could lower his risks.

A1c better: It is good that you are testing your control of diabetes. Normal fasting blood sugar is less than 100, however for long term control of diabetes, testing for hemoglobin A1c every 3-4 months is better and you should aim for A1c level of less than 7.0

It's all one: Disorder; only the name changes as your sugar gets higher. The health risks don't change as the name changes, you're at the same risk right from the beginning - that's why it's important not to wait but begin diet, exercise, weight loss and education now. Unlikely: If both HbA1c and fasting glucose are normal you are most likely fine.  Occasionally people are having much higher sugars AFTER they eat (measured 2 hours) and are diabetic without knowing it.  This would have been reflected in the A1c though which is why I think you're probably fine!

my fasting triglyceride is 78 and fasting glucose is 89, but a1c is 5.7.  normal bmi.  any significance to a1c?

Normal...: A hemoglobin A1C of less than 6 is considered normal so there is no need for concern. It would need to be at least 6.5 to diagnose diabetes. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck!
