Neurologist: If not already done, you should get your roommate to a Neurologist  who can diagnose and treat the seizures.  In the meantime, you can provide help with transportation as your roommate should not be driving, out alone, swimming, or engaging in any risky activities.

how can i be sure that i'm having nocturnal seizures. what are symptoms and things i should look for when i awake?

Could be tough: If you sleep alone, you may not be completely sure, but some clues include, awakening on floor next to bed, tongue sore in am, back or neck aching in am, episode of bed wetting or bowel movement, am confusion, perhaps dull diffuse headache, nearby objects astray.  Independent answer might come from sleep-deprived eeg or even ambulatory eeg.  See an epileptologist.

Not necessarily: Following a seizure, there is a post-ictal period lasting sometimes up to 30-45 minutes.  Furthermore, some of these events cause falling out of bed, with possible head injury or concussion, with resultant amnesia. Seizures themselves are often forgotten, another source of amnesia.  In other words, the subject rarely ever knows what occurred.

Wake up on the floor: Gi symptoms can also be a symptom of seizures. Autonomic seizures present with GI discomfort and a 'rising sensation' in the abdomen. Most seizures types are more likely to occur during sleep. I'm sure you'll get this sorted out. I'd get an eeg and check your calcium level (tums).

Unlikely : Night terrors and seizures are separate entities and readily separated by their pattern. I have no difficulty excluding one or the other after a proper evaluation. If your doc is unsure of the diagnosis, seek a second opinion and or relevant testing.

Seizures : Seizures that occur after trauma should be evaluated by a neurologist. Medications that can be used are dilantin, keppra, (levetiracetam) depakote, phenobarbital, tegretol etc. Safest may be keppra, (levetiracetam) with less side effects compared to others. Your neurologist would be able to prescribe the best suitable medication after full eval.

is coherent sleep-talking a sign of nocturnal seizures? sometimes my speech is vulgar if that changes anything...

No: No correlation between coherent sleep talking and seizures. Plenty of people with violent convulsive disorders at night never even utter a sound before going into a spell.

i woke up and i couldn't move and speak.i tried to shout but i can't..i was hearing my snore..could it be nocturnal seizure or something serious?

Accepted Answer

Not seizure: Could be sleep paralysis, which COULD BE (not IS) suggestive of narcolepsy. If it happens more than once, see your doctor.
