do i really need a colposcopy everytime i have an abnormal pap?

Most likely: A pap smear is not good for diagnosing specific problems. It is only good for picking up general abnormalities. So if your pap smear shows abnormal cells, you need a colposcopy to actually give you a diagnosis as to what that abnormality represents. Very important!

how common is it to have an abnormal pap 6 months following a colposcopy freezing?

Accepted Answer

Quite common: The freezing or cryotherapy does not get rid of the virus which caused the abnormal cells.  It only gets rid of the abnormal cells.  If the virus that caused the cellular abnormalties (hpv) persists in your system, it can cause cellular irregularity (dysplasia) at any time.  Just make sure you keep up with the pap smear schedule recommended by your gyn.

: PAP smear may be dependent on how proficient the person doing it however Colposcopy is not usual if all PAP smears have been normal. Colposcopy is obtaining biopsy under visual inspection of the cervix that may look abnormal; and you are right it is more invasive.

Pap with pinching: It is a similar examination as a pap smear but the biopsies of the cervix might produce some "pinching".

Very common: It is not unusual for a pap smear to return as abnormal on a follow up pap. It does not mean that you have cancer. Your doctor may repeat the pap in 6 months because it is not unusual for the dysplasia to resolve or your doctor may want to do another colposcopy. You and your doctor will decide the treatment that best fits you. The important thing is that you do not skip your pap smears

Possible: There is a wide spectrum of what is abnormal on a pap smear. Sometimes the abnormality is such that you see it at colposcopy, many times the colposcopy is negative. It is best to have the health care provider explain to you the specific nature of your abnormal pap smear.

: HPV are of many types and only a few types lead to positive Pap for Cx cancer. Follow your docs advice.  colposcopy - if recommended is a simple procedure

Depends: There are various grades of abnormalities in pap smears. Mild abnormality, especially if you are hpv negative, may be followed by repeat pap. More severe abnormality may prompt colposcopy and biopsy. Follow your doctor's advice.

Abnormal clls on PAP: This likely means that there are abnormal cells on your pap smear, and that colposcopy found nothing.  But you will need and hopefully got a cervical biopsy during your colposcopy, and another pap next year at the earliest if your biopsy was negative.  It is not normal, but it probably does not have enough evidence that there is neoplasia/pre-cancer.  Keep close follow-up with your dr. To be sure.

Depends: Depends on the abnormality found, if the pap shows abnormal cells with high risk hpv types, then coloposcopy is indicated. If the pap shows anything more abnormal such as low grade or high grade dysplasia, then colposcopy is performed. Generally, colposcopy is performed at the most every 6 months depending on the level of dysplasia.
