Don't multi-task!: Set up a comfortable non-distracting study zone: lighting, temperature, noise, posture, etc.  Plan a reasonable time frame - blocks w/ breaks for fluids, toilet, snack, fun, breathing. Learn if reading is enough - perhaps record important points to listen to later. Consider a study partner - some learn best that way. Don't fool yourself that you can multi-task. We're not designed to do that well.

None, unless...: Unless a patient has a neuro-psychiatric condition such as Attention Deficit Disorder, doctors don't use meds to increase a patient's alertness and focus for studying or taking tests. We don't want students to use ADD drugs as "perfomance enhancing drugs". If worried, one can write down his symptoms he's had over the past 3 years, and visit his primary care doctor 2-3 times to see if ADD is there.

Speak with your doc: Why did you start venlaxafine and is it helping with the reason it was started for?

Commonly, antidepressants have side effects such as decreased concentration which make them intolerable.  You may adjust after a few days/weeks or you may continue to have problems focusing.  Speak with the doctor who prescribed this medication.  You can always try a different medicine if necessary.

Making sure you are in a place conducive to studying without distractions. Depression is another possible underlying issue. Lastly, if this is a chronic problem, consider getting evaluated by your doctor for Attention Deficit Disorder.

: It is not feasible to provide an opinion without additional history, physical examination may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor to see if you may be depressed. Depression is treatable. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water. Study tricks: One key to successful study is to think of the fact intended to be remembered and to immediately tie it to an image that suddenly pops into mind. It does not matter what the image is, even if it is not socially correct.  Another trick to embed the fact as a remembered thought is to repeat it in the mind, as a thought, rapidly in several successions.  Successful remembering can be rewarding & fun.
