Don't multi-task!: Set up a comfortable non-distracting study zone: lighting, temperature, noise, posture, etc. Plan a reasonable time frame - blocks w/ breaks for fluids, toilet, snack, fun, breathing. Learn if reading is enough - perhaps record important points to listen to later. Consider a study partner - some learn best that way. Don't fool yourself that you can multi-task. We're not designed to do that well.

Figure out how you : Learn best; e.g., by what you see, what you hear, what you touch or what touches you. Use multi-modal methods, like reading a syllabus while listenting to a recorded lecture, or pacing ; reading out loud to yourself. When you study for a test at night, go straight to sleep afterwards; get up early enough to review the material next am. Reward yourself for keeping at it to increase study time.
