May be normal: It is normal for newborns to lose up to 10% of their birth weight within the first week of life. This weight loss represents excess body fluid. By two weeks of age, your newborn should be back at his birth weight, if not above. If your newborn's weight loss persists or seems excessive, start keeping track of his daily wet and dirty diapers and see your pediatrician.

Yes: Most newborns will lose weight initially. Babies are born with some extra fluid weight, probably to prepare them for the transition when breast milk is low volume at first. They will typically lose some of that weight at first - even formula-fed babies will. We like to see them regain their birth weight by at least 2 weeks of age.

: Depends upon his feeding.
If he's been on breastfeeding, no bowel movement for up to 72 hours can be normal as long as he 's been fed 2-3 hourly and has had  at least 5 wet diapers each day.  In case infant has not been fed often enough along with  decreased urine output, seek a medical attention.

23 to 24 weeks: Infants can frequently survive at this age, but many of them have severe morbidities such as cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease, failure to thrive (grow) and future school problems.

Use NOTHING!: Please don't use anything to the cord area. Most studies have shown that using things to "keep cord clean" actually lead to more infections , especially with resistant bacteria. Just let cord dry out, if it gets soiled with urine or stool, just use soap and water to clean it. Usually falls off more quickly if you just leave it alone - Mother Nature will take care of it.

for boyfriend- overweight, does a lot of hard labor as a job (17 miles a day) and eats one to two meals, but isnt losing weight. whats going on?

Uncertain.: However, if he eats as few as one meal per day on some days, he may be decreasing his metabolic rate.  Eating too little can also have that effect. If he is building muscle through hard labor - muscle weights more than fat. Additionally, calories burned must exceed caloric intake to lose weight.

No COVID treatment: Please continue to wear a mask and use good hand washing. The baby is too young to receive a flu vaccination, but family members should have one this year. If there is a temperature elevation of 100. 4 or higher, please see your Pediatrician.
