Depends on situation: A newborn must first pass the dark sticky meconium stool ; this starts day one or is abnormal.Once it clears, if baby is breast fed they may stool a little smear every feeding or one big crib full once a week. Breast milk is so well digested that it may not leave much behind for poo. If it is soft, the frequency of stooling is not important.Formula babies go more often.

i started my newborn on single grain gerber rice cereal 1x a day for 2 days now. she usually poops everyday once a day and she hasnt yet. what to do?

Plugged up: I use cereals to plug up a kid naturally after they develop diarrhea. Infants don't need cereals until 6 months, so I'm curious why a newborn would get them.That was the method 50 years ago but not today.Any time you alter babies diet it can effect their stool pattern.

See your doctor: There are many causes of inconsolable crying in an infant. This include among many others: colic, constipation, gas. Colic it is very common. I would recommend that you first see your physician to make sure there are no other problems.

is it normal to poop 2-3 times a day? ive been fasting mistakenly since i dont wake up hungry and dont like eating right after waking up and my sleep schedule is all over the place with a newborn. does fasting makes you poop more than once?

: It is more likely that the hormones changes in your body due to just having given birth are responsible for increased stooling. As long as the stool is not watery (diarrhea), there is nothing wrong with stooling 2-3 times per day. Make sure to drink copious non caffeinated fluids if you are breastfeeding, and eat a calcium rich diet high in fruits and vegetables.

Common: Picture how you would feel laying flat on your back trying to poop with belly muscles that are too flabby to assist. You would hold your breath &amp; use your breathing muscles to get this done. The same picture applies to any newborn. Many will fuss/get red faced or even scream during pooping or even moving food along. If they feed vigorously &amp; act normal most of the day they are fine.

my newborns bilirubin was 8.1 at 25 hrs. this was 95th percentile - what is the recommended course of action? its below guidelines for phototherapy - should he be given formula to make him poop? he pooped a lot the first day but hasnt in 12hrs?

: Despite the existence of "breast milk jaundice," usually not harmful, breast milk if available would be the diet most likely to eliminate via the stool.  It may also be helpful to sit in a sunny window with baby just in a diaper.

Urine output: One of the ways we gauge adequate breast milk intake is by the number of wet diapers a baby makes in a 24 hour period ( should be at least 5). The other way is by weight gain ( at least an ounce per day).  Stooling  patterns are highly variable in nursed newborns as some stool every feed while others stool once a week!

No: No,  fever at this age could indicate a potentially serious bacterial infection. Specially with decrease eating and increase sleepiness. Take the baby to a dr as soon as possible.

Yes: A young baby usually poops after every feeding or after every-other feeding (averaging 3-4 poops a day). As the weeks go by, babies tend to poop less often, some twice a day while others once every-other day. As long as a baby is normal in eating, growth, and development; and does not have constipation, bloating, or tummy aches; the number of poops per day is not very important.
