my 2 year old has 2-3 small grey/blue spots on his sclera in both eyes since born, will he grow out of it? was told common and ok, but i worry

Accepted Answer

Normal: Just like our skin the sclera can have pigment changes as well.  These changes may or may not change over the course of your child's life.  It does not affect the vision.

my 5 year old has grey patches above her iris, more so on the white part of her eyes. i noticed she had a grey spot when she was younger but these patches are new. she was also prescribed glasses recently. should i worry?

: It's hard to know based upon your description. However, it would be a good idea to have her evaluated by an ophthalmologist to make sure it's nothing serious.

Gray eyes: Send photo as could be arcus senilus or scleral plaques. Need to see photo to see cause.

Could be Cholesterol: This can be a sign of high cholesterol.  You should see an ophthalmologist and get checked because while we can see this normally sometimes, you're a little too young and this may be a sign of high cholesterol.

See eye doc.: Kids can have grey, black or brown areas on the sclera (white part of the eye).  It if usually nothing BUT, especially if this is new, she needs to get checked by an eye doctor.  Do it in the next few weeks.

Corneal arcus: This is a deposit of lipid from your circulation which frequently will accumulate actually in an arc or ring at the edge of the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye).  It is more obvious in those with brown eyes.  It is benign, will cause no change in the vision or health of the eye.

Probably not: However, it would be smart to see an ophthalmologist and let them tell you what it is.

Choroidal Veins: Discoloration of the sclera (whites of the eyes), is usually due to the underlying choroidal veins which can show through. It may sometimes be associated with a genetic disorder of collagen formation, but not always. Light pigment: Lightly pigmented iris' can take on different hues under different lighting intensities. 
It is normal.

hi i'm 18 and have dark brown eyes and recently i have noticed that my iris have developed a grey outer ring. is it something i should worry about?

Grey ring on iris: IMahmood ~ that is an early onset of "arcus senilis" characteristic of older people. It is probably of no significance, but it is sometimes associated with raised cholesterol so have your cholesterol panel done and if normal I would not be concerned, but check cholesterol regularly.
