Ortho first: Would work closely with an orthopedic specialist, or podiatrist, if on foot.  Would treat the ankle fully first, and if question of "nerve damage", get an EMG test to see if a pinched nerve, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome.  Although many meds could ease symptoms, a decompressive surgery might be useful.  All depends on what truly is going on here.

Pain, swelling, ...: The signs of ankle sprain and a fracture can be very similar, and if the sprain (tearing of muscle fibers and tendon fibers) is bad enough, the treatment may be the same, and a bad sprain could take even longer to heal.  If ia non-displaced fracture (inside ankle=medial malleolus, outside = lateral, posterior=heel), there will be swelling, pain, heat, very tender. Ice, elevate, immobilize-ortho.

Unlikely: I think that it's very unlikely that an injury/incident from 10yrs ago would lay dormant then come back to haunt you now but stranger things have been known to happen. With that said, your description of your complaints is too vague for a definitive answer, which is best addressed by your family doc who can examine &amp; order appropriate tests to arrive at diagnosis and offer you correct treatment.

Nerve impingement: Unlikely, that the fibular bone moved to pinch a nerve.  The peroneal nerve (superficial peroneal nerve) is located in the skin and can be impinged through swelling resulting from an ankle sprain.  The bone, ligaments, muscle, tendons are deeper than the skin, but the swelling associated with injury can cause shooting pain, burning, tingling, and numbness.  Hope this helps.

Sprain: That is very dependant on the patient , but a general rule would be 3-4 weeks minimum.   If surgery was done even longer.  Ligaments can take as long as bones to heal and pushing walking too soon can result in re-injury with even worse consequences than a sprain.  Be patient - it takes time.  Good luck !

Neuroma: After trauma to the ankle and foot there can develop a scar in the small nerves that becomes very painful.  When this scar is on the sole of the foot or in the small spaces between the toes, or in the location of the tendons and joints, there can be considerable discomfort and disability.  A good foot specialist (podiatrist) can help with management.  Surgery may just cause more problems.
