Ortho first: Would work closely with an orthopedic specialist, or podiatrist, if on foot. Would treat the ankle fully first, and if question of "nerve damage", get an EMG test to see if a pinched nerve, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome. Although many meds could ease symptoms, a decompressive surgery might be useful. All depends on what truly is going on here.

I do not think so: There is no nerve at the ankle level could cause that, most likely the ligament did not heal or you some thing loose in the joint(loose body). Please ask if MRI could be order to see if what I am talking is correct.

Two thoughts...: If the ankle instability remains a chronic problem it can be treated with taping, bracing or surgery. Although you do not give any specifics on the location of the nerve injury there are a minority of ankle sprains that result in traction (neuropraxic) injuries to the superficial peroneal nerve. This is a sensory nerve on the top of the foot. See an orthopaedic surgeon: www.Aaos.Org.
