: A mass is a group of cells or other materials stuck together in a swelling or enlargement. A tumor is a mass formed by abnormal cells, but not any mass has  to be a tumor. A tumor does not mean necesarily cancer, it can very well be benign.

It was felt to be the factor that induced destruction of malignancies but when sequenced proved to be the same molecule as cachexin, a chemical produced by tumor like pancreatic cancer that induced cachexia in patients.
