Thrombosis: It's not uncommon for a vein to thrombus (clot) if it's been cannulated. It will feel firm, perhaps a bit sore, and could appear puffy. If there's associated redness, inform your doctor. With time, the vein should recanulate (open up) but not absolutely. Of nominal concern. Good luck.

Hematoma or IV infil: You either have a small hematoma at the site of IV insertion or had IV fluid or medication infiltrated into the soft tissue next to the vein where the IV was inserted, do warm compresses. Take a face-cloth, wet it, few seconds in microwave..warm compress every few hours.

i just had an ultrasound on what we think is infected hair follicle. ive been on antibiotics 9 days and it still hurts. it looks like my vein is swollen or a tendon.  im waiting for results but im worried about the vein. what do you think that is?

: An infected hair follicle or abscess would be swollen, red&amp; tender and eventually come to a head and drain pus. I'm not sure what kind of an ultrasound you had. You could consult a general surgeon for advice.

Phlebitis : this is some type of phlebitis. given this is a superficial vein warm compress an NSAID should probably resolve the issue. if you would experience any redness or fever this can get infected should be seen.

Hardened vein: This will probably heal in time.  Does it hurt you?  Is it in the hand or the arm?

The other veins will help out while it is healing.  It is not often that any special treatment is needed for this common issue.  It has only been 4 days, give it a few more days.

May be normal: If the vein collapses when pushed on, is not tender, and there is no surrounding redness or increased warmth, then it can indicate overall hydration status, but is not likely a problem. If any of the above are present, then you should see your Dr or Urologist for evaluation.

Is it really a vein?: There are lymph nodes ("glands") behind the ears that can get inflamed from certain infections. An inflamed vein in that spot would be very unusual. Have it examined by a doctor.
