Have it checked: What you describe is a condition known as onychocryptosis or ingrown toenail. The symptoms can vary from very mild to severe depending on how long it has been present. It occurs when part of the nail penetrates the skin, which can often result in an infection.   The treatment includes antibiotics, and removal of the offending part of the nail.  See a dermatologist or podiatrist  for evaluation.

Ingrown toenail: Use warm compresses and ice for 20 mins a piece.  20 mins warm.  20 mins ice. You will likely need An antibiotic and someone to fix the ingrown toenail.  A podiatrist would be a good choice or ask you family doctor if they can help you .  You maybe able to get an antibiotic by calling your doctor on call this weekend.  Good luck and feel better!

Podiatry.: I would encourage you to get up the courage to see your podiatrist.  If there are fragments of nail growing into your skin - the infection will continue. The procedure for an ingrown toe nail is really not that bad.  What if you develop cellulitis or the infection travels in your body?

You will have pain: Due to poorly fitted narrow tipped shoes outer edge of  nail big toe grows into flesh, causing pain, aggravates by wearing shoes.Some times you can see red flesh, pus at the edge of nail.  It is time to see  your  dpm   or md ( most of md s do not perform toe nail surgery ) to help you.

Separation anxiety.: Discoloring of the nail can be caused by several things. Your history narrows the possibilities. An examination would simplify getting to the real problem. Having said that, more than likely the color change is either due to air getting under the nail or the effects of a fungal infection starting in the corner area of the nail. Both can occur when the plate is separated from the underlying bed.

hey, i've just had an ingrown toenail removal surgery from both sides of the same toe. i've just realised that the nail is quite loose. what should i do from here?

: If only a 2-3 mm sliver on both sides should not make the nail loose. If greater amounts removed possible for nail to be unstable. Keep tape or bandaid until you can see the doctor.

Shoes or foot type: if your toenail is chronically ingrown. You may have flat feet or your shoes may not give u enough room. Pointy shoes do come with their challenges. I would advise you go to a podiatrist so they can discuss the possible causes

Need to see MD/Podia: You said you removed the ingrown toenail.I don't know how you did it by yourself.It is infected and you need to consult your podiatrist or your doctor asap and may need antibiotics and may need surgery if needed.

Perhaps: Was the nail root (matrix) removed?  If your doctor has performed what was suppose to be a permanent partial removal then ask him/her if there is another technique they can use. Chemical destruction of the matrix is fairly successful, however, sometimes they do require repeat or an excision of the matrix is needed.
