Have it checked: What you describe is a condition known as onychocryptosis or ingrown toenail. The symptoms can vary from very mild to severe depending on how long it has been present. It occurs when part of the nail penetrates the skin, which can often result in an infection. The treatment includes antibiotics, and removal of the offending part of the nail. See a dermatologist or podiatrist for evaluation.

Ingrown toenail: Many patients cn get immediate relief from an extremely painful red and swollen ingrown toenail once they see a physician or podiatrist and have the"spicule" of the nail plate removed from the dermis of the nail fold. Sometimes the dagger of the nail plate is lifted up and material is placed underneath so it can grow out withoiut embedding itself again. Antibiotics may be needed.

Infection: Most likely infected. May have started with an ingrown toenail but more serious problem now. You need to see your doctor, have the toe evaluated, cultured, and start an oral and topical antibiotic. In the meanwhile, keep it clean, minimize activity, avoid tight fitting shoes, apply an otc antibiotic such as polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) or neosporin.

Podiatrist: If this is a recurrent problem see podiatrist for chemical treatment to destroy the offending piece of nail. Podiatrists feel that ingrown toenails issue to the shape of the toe and can be familial. If necessary a phenol matrix destruction is a permanent solution.
