Hydrate and protect: First, you have to make sure the tissues are staying healthy.  The easy fix is to drink more water to hydrate from the inside, and wear a lip balm to protect lips from the environment (and keep moisture in).  Next, eliminate the possibility that youhave an alergic reaction by noting if you get symptoms shortly after certain foods or gums.  No relief, see your dentist or oral surgeon to assess.

Must rule out cancer: Must rule out squamous cell carcinoma!  are you in the sunshine state or like to stay out in the sun?  Usually all lesions on the lip should heal within 5 days or at most 1 week.  If the lesion stays longer, please consult your dentist/pathologist!  its (squamous cell carcinoma) occurrence is rare and probably unlikely, but that is the number one lesion that i must rule out in all my patient.

Contact rash: This could be from a minor allergic reaction to something you are eating/drinking or to a makeup/cream you are applying.More commonly,this is from lip-licking,which often becomes a habit and is irritating to the lips and surrounding area.You may want to keep a written log of when this is happening and what foods/creams you are using and when this flares up.See your doctor for possible treatment.

i recently had a skin irritation on my eyelids. eyelids were red, itchy, dry and flaky. i used tobradex which eased irritation significantly but it still itches sometimes. i now have a similar irritation on my lips? how can i treat this?

Rinse eyes: You may have an irritant and contact inflammation or an allergic reaction. Wash your face and rinse your eyes with lukewarm water. Allergy eye drops are available over the counter. For your lip irritation consider an eczema lotion, and please follow up with your PCP. If there are any vision changes, please see a physician right away.

Allergy: Since the rash is not persistent but does recur, It could be due to allergy or intolerance to makeup or cosmetics. Occasionally such a reaction is an eczema reaction to foods. Some people react to materials in eye glasses this way. A dermatologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise treatment.

my daughter (11) has small red bumps resembling pimples on her upper lip. she says theyre itchy. yesterday there was one - this morning 7. we are traveling in egypt, using spf50 sunscreen. air very dry. anything to worry about?

Lip bumps: May be herpetic or  perioral dermatitis.  For herpes use acyclovir and avoid sun as that exacerbates .  Do not touch herpetic lesions directly as they are contagious. Wash hands immediately and do not  rub eyes. Or may be perioral dermatitis  / impetigo that needs antibiotics either topical or oral - dry weather / sun can worsen it. DO NOT use hydrocortisone  f/u /w/ doc before trip.

i am 14 years old, this has happened 3 times before. last night my lip started showing red bumps, and got dry and swollen. i took benedryll but its spreading to my cheeks, chin and nose. its itchy and look kind of like mini pimples. what do i do??

: I don't consider this to be a trivial perioral dermatitis or acne.  Although it could be an allergic reaction, lip swelling,and spreading eruption like yours should be examined ASAP to look for viral or bacterial infection which is involving the danger area if the face. Proceed to the ER where prompt evaluation is available.

No: A "cold sore", herpes simplex type 1, will evolve from tingling to tiny blister to raw spot to scab. Heals in 1 or 2 weeks. For dry, irritated lips, try chapstick, vaseline, Aquaphor, etc. Apply several times a day. Avoid licking and rubbing.

? Fungal : Seborrhoeic dermatitis might be the case, you may be having dandruff as well. You want to see your dictor / dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis, meanwhile,  Ketconazole shampoo OTC might help, on hair/affected areas, read the instructions carefully, avoid getting into your eyes, best wishes
