Can't nail this down: There are so many variables, so little data &amp; so much variation in autism spectrum disorders that It's really not possible to calculate the odds that you and your wife will have a child with autism. If a couple has one child with autism, they are more likely to have another one; it's much more common in boys than girls &amp; more common in older fathers.  Beyond that, it's still quite a mystery.

Remote: Autism is a spectrum disorder that is very complicated.  Some genetic disorders may present as autism.  There may be a carrier state.  However, the details of genetic transmission are very poorly understood.  If there is a specific genetic marker that can be found, then there is a better chance to answer your question.  Without a marker it is not possible to give an answer.

Ask your ob-gyn for pre-pregnancy genetic counseling with review of a 3- generation family history of both parents for medical & psychiatric illnesses & review of lab results. Have a flu vaccine & begin folate (folic acid) supplements  400 ?g/day at least 3 mos. Prior to conception.

Mgt: The risk of congenital heart disease is low especially if there is no genetic syndrome eg Down Syndrome.
