It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. You should see a professional who can help you in treating your anxiety appropriately. Nasal congestion : Your symptoms are consistent with an upper respiratory infection which could be viral or bacterial. You did not note how long you have had symptoms. If over 7-10!days would recommend seeing an ENT specialist to see if you need antibiotics.. also would check your pulse , not sure if the palpitations are from medicine you are taking or your illness.

Mgt.: There may have been an initial pneumonia, was the patient treated with medications? If he/she is still symptomatic, I would suggest a culture(s) of airway secretions and close follow up. Need an exam: With those symptoms and the smoking history, I'd be most suspicious of a pulmonary problem like pneumonia, but there's a long list of possibilities, and you really should have someone examine you and listen to your lungs. Based on that, they might consider further testing. Feel better!

Heart: Heart disease is more common.  In 2008, cardiovascular diseased caused 812, 000 deaths—33 percent of all deaths wheresas lung disease caused 242, 000.  However,  overall population statistics may have nothing to do with your grandfatther and hopefully evaluation in the hospital will quickly determine the causes for his shortness of breath whether cardiac/lung or even anemia.
