Should be minimal: There can be some discomfort with braces because it is putting force on the teeth that are being moved.  There can be some irritation to the cheecks and gums a little at first as they are getting used to them as well.  It will be different and unusual but you will be fine.

Use Salt water / wax: Braces can often cause discomfort from the brackets, bands, or wires in the mouth.  Using salt water rinses will help heal the gum tissues.  In addition, dental wax given to you by your orthodontist, general dentist, or even local pharmacy will greatly help by placing it over the areas that are causing the problem. Finally, your orthodontist can often even trim the wire or polish the brackets.

can you tell me more about boil and bite mouth guard with braces?

Bad idea: Once you &quot;form&quot; the mouth guard, every time you bite into it you drive your teeth right back into the shape in the mouthguard&#x27;s memory.  In other words, they prevent correction of your malocclusion.  Any orthodontic specialist would be happy to provide you with an orthodontic mouthguard that will allow malocclusion correction while at the same time protecting teeth and tissues.

Sure: We use a very simple mouth prop that keeps the lips, cheeks and tongue away from the teeth as we place braces. It may feel irritating or odd, but it no way prevents breathing orally.

Brace sores: Warm salt water rinses will help and be sure to place wax on the brackets or wires that are rubbing and causing sores. If wax won't stick then use sugar free chewing gum instead.

Advil (ibuprofen) or wax: If the teeth are sore after adjustment of the appliances, advil (ibuprofen) and soft diet are the best options.  If the appliances are rubbing on the lips and cheeks, ask your orthodontist for wax.  It is a soft wax that you can put on the appliances to prevent sharp edges from irritating the tissues.

Numbing agents: Dental wax and dental silicone can be tried. Otc products such as peroxyl mouth wash,  zilactin-b, biotene mouth wash,  colgate ora-base soothe-n-seal,  ora-5, anbesol gel, orajel help with the painful canker sores caused by braces.

Go see your dentist: Tell your dentist/orthodontist (one who gave you braces) about your concerns and ask her/him your questions. In fact, it's always best to ask as many questions as possible prior to starting medication or undergoing any surgery/procedure.

Disasterous: Most likely disasterous. Retainers retain, and without them you will collapse possibly to your pretreatment condition. Go back and finish it correctly after all the time and effort and $ you have put in. Then be great for the rest of your life.

A : A good mouth piece (mouth guard?) needs to fit securely around each and every tooth.  That type of fit would not allow tooth movement so it can't be used with braces.  Your orthodontist can fit you with a mouthgaurd that is designed to be used with braces. It won't protect your teeth as well as the standard type.  The good news is that the archwire that connects all your braces together adds a great deal of protection to your teeth.
