This symptom pattern suggests, to me at least, pelvic sacroiliac joint (sij) injury from participation in extreme sports with fall(s) & buttock impact. Sij disorder pain is worse lying down. I have seen ibs in young extreme sport enthusiasts; accompanied by sij disorder.

How much upper: Left back pain in the kidney region could be stones.  It could be a kidney problem.  If under yur shoulder blade then it could be from your scapula or your back.  You do need to see a  doctor to explore the possibilities and get an examination.

Anti-inflammatory medications, massage, and ice packs may relieve the pain. If the symptoms persist, then see a chiropractor to realign the rib head.

Morning back pain with stiffness is usually related to arthritis....Disc degeneration.

May be muscle pain: It is difficult to say what is causing the pain without more information and physical exam.It is most likely muscle pain and may be related to day time activities and rest at night while you are sleeping makes it better.You can try over the counter Naprosyn (naproxen) or ibuprofen if you are not allergic to it and don't have peptic ulcer.If persistant see your doctor and get it checked.Message might help too

"Sleep wrong": Assuming you have only back pain, done nothing physically unusual in the preceding few days, and are not menstruating/ovulating, then most likely your sleep position strained your back or compressed the facet joints in the back of your spine. Either way, such pain should be short-lived. If it isn't, something else is wrong.

Usually no: Spine doctors rec the firmest mattress that you are comfortable on.  The softer the mattress, the more out of alignment the spine is during sleep.  The best way to choose a mattress firmness is to lie on your side on the mattress and have someone look at your entire back, neck to buttocks.  Your spine should be completely straight.
