Back pain: Most common cause is muscle strain (pulled muscles). There are several other spine related causes such as disc herniation and arthritis. Non spine causes include kidney infection/stones, gallbladder stones, pancreas inflammation, ulcers , etc. Morning back pain with stiffness is usually related to arthritis....Disc degeneration.

Check the mattress: A common cause for back pain upon awakening is a mattress that is too soft and not supportive of your spine. A firm mattress (or placing a large piece of plywood between the mattress and box spring) may help. If back pain persists or worsens, be sure to check with your doctor to rule out the many other causes of back pain.

Old mattress: There are a lot of possibilities but one of the most common is a old mattress. If your mattress is over eight to ten years, it may be time to get a new one.
